In 1943, Glen joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in World War II as a food server. This experience in mass food preparation would later prove invaluable.

From Hot Dogs to Tacos: The Entrepreneurial Journey

After his honorable discharge in 1946, Bell's entrepreneurial spirit took hold. In 1948, he started Bell's Drive-In, a humble hot dog stand in San Bernardino. By 1952, he sold the stand to pursue a bigger venture: selling both hot dogs and hamburgers.

Observing the popularity of the Mitla Cafe, a Mexican restaurant across the street known for its hard-shelled tacos, Bell saw an opportunity. He learned the recipe for dorado style tacos from Gloria Hoyle, the head chef at Mitla Cafe. In 1954, he opened Taco-Tia, his first taco stand, selling tacos for just 19 cents. He opened three Taco Tias in the San Bernardino area. Later, he opened four El Tacos with a partner in the Long Beach area. He partnered with John Galardi, who later founded Wienerschnitzel.

In 1962, Glen Bell went solo and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey, California. Originally called Tay-Kohs by his customers, Taco Bell offered a simplified menu of Mexican-inspired items. The restaurant was an instant success. In 1964, Kermit Becky, a retired Los Angeles police officer, became Taco Bell's first franchisee, marking a significant step in the company's expansion.

Rapid Growth and PepsiCo Acquisition
